Common questions
What happens if I pass away on a backcountry trip?
Your family — or anyone acting on their behalf — makes one call to APASI, and APASI coordinates everything from there: confirming identification, working with local authorities and a funeral home near the remote camp or trailhead, preparing the remains, arranging transportation home, and managing the government paperwork and red tape. If APASI is not contacted at the time of death, benefits cannot be provided — which is why members carry their wallet ID cards, so the number to call is always within reach.
How does the 75-mile rule work?
Coverage applies when death occurs more than 75 miles from your legal residence, which must be in the United States or Canada. No service is provided for deaths 75 miles or less from home.
What does the $350 cover?
A one-time payment for lifetime membership: full logistics coordination worldwide and 100% of eligible transport costs, so your family never has to arrange — or pay for — the journey home at the worst possible time. No expiration, no dues, ever.
